As the day grows closer, I'm starting to feel really nostalgic for Disney World. I'm remembering the sights and the sounds and the smells and the feelings of Disney World, and, while it sometimes makes me happy and excited, a lot of the time, it makes me sad because of the memories associated with it. I have to make new memories now, and I don't know if I want that. Do the new memories of how a ride smells replace my old memories of the same smell of that same ride? It worries me.
My favorite feeling in all of Walt Disney World (maybe in all of the world) is the warmth you feel as you move toward the drop shaft on Tower of Terror. You've been in the nice, dark, air-conditioned hotel watching the ghosts and the cheesy fifth dimension scene, and your elevator starts moving forward. You can see that star field ahead of you open, and you start to feel the air warming up as you move closer to the Florida heat. When your elevator locks in to place and you can feel the change from the dry, cool air of the hotel and the hot, sticky, humid air of Florida, you know you're in for something amazing.
I was also hit today with remembering the feeling of the cool, wet air of the queue for Pirates of the Caribbean. This one is almost the exact opposite of Tower of Terror. You leave the Florida heat for the cool, sometimes too cold, air of the passages through the fort. This may be Disney theming at its best. There is nothing here to remind you of the bright sun or the hot, hot heat outside. You are fully, really inside an old fort with skeletons and cannons and chess.
And then there's the smell of Disney. When you load on to Pirates or Its a Small World or Gran Fiesta Tour or even Maelstrom, that smell of not-quite stagnant water is overwhelming. A little sour, mostly musty, it's such a specific smell, and if you ever smell something even similar to it, suddenly you're hearing the cannons fire and the Captain shout, "FIRE AT WILL!"
Or what about the lovely, lovely pie smell of Philharmagic? I stand by my statement that if Disney makes a perfume/air freshener/febreze with this scent, I will buy multiples. It's so delicious
And there's the smell of the corrosion chamber on Test Track. "Did you remember to turn off those robots?" No. And thank goodness for that. My dad has a eucalyptus room scent here at home, and every once in a while, I'll catch a good whiff and be transported into that car, leaning to the side to avoid being misted by the crazy robots.
Or the smell of Dinosaur. Yeah, I know it's the same smell as the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland, but I don't have the privilege of having ever ridden that, so I can't make a comment on it. However, I can say that I really, really don't like that smell. It's so...biting is the best word for it. It actually hurts me to smell it. When you step into the loading room after the pre-show and get ready to descend the stairs and the smell really hits you, the smell is so pungent it hurts. I am not a fan.
The smell of Nescafe coffee makes me think of Journey into Imagination with Figment, since Disney felt it smelled bad enough to work as skunt scent.
And the smell of rotting pizza, ranch dressing, salad, and chicken pasta will always make me think of Star Tours and the Muppets because I had to walk past the Pizza Planet/Mama Melrose dumpster to get to work. That. Thing. Reeked.
And there are smells other people would put here: the burning wood from Spaceship Earth, the chilidog burp from Stitch's Great Escape, the overpowering scent of incense or whatever it is at the Polynesian Resort that gave me a headache and makes me never want to go back there.
I suppose I shouldn't be too worried. When I moved in for my first Program, I had been to WDW as a kid, but I didn't remember much. One of the few things I remembered was Maelstrom, the ride in Norway. I didn't remember that there were polar bears in it, though. All I remembered were the trolls. I remembered the troll yelling, "Over the falls! Over the falls!" and now, every time I ride Maelstrom, I have this feeling that we are, in fact, going to go backwards over the falls. Because that's the feeling I had as a kid. I have new memories of Maelstrom now, though, but they didn't replace the old ones. It's like lasagna. There are layers of history, but once you cut into them, they all end up coming together and mixing together. Seriously, have you ever had a thing of lasagna stay in its layers? Because I sure haven't. I could have gone with rocks or parfait, but those usually stay in their layers and you only see one layer at a time. Trust me, it makes perfect sense in my head.
I've been sleeping horribly lately just because of the number of things on my mind. Well, maybe not the number of things, but the volume of the few things about which I have to worry.
- Packing.
Stupid packing is driving me crazy. I'm at the point now where I'm going to throw whatever is left into a bag and leave it behind with the rest of my "stuff to keep". Really, though, I think most of what I'm looking at is trash, and as soon as I get that out of my room, it'll be fine. Then I have to worry about how all the stuff I am taking will fit into my car. I'm bringing way more stuff this time than I did last time, including bulky things like a printer, a giant buzz lightyear statue, and a television. - Moving.
The packing thing is bad enough--trying to figure out what I want to keep, what I want to get rid of, and what I want to take to Florida. On top of that, I have to think about how I'm supposed to be moving to FL permanently after this, so I have to worry about money and finding a place to live and getting a full-time, non-CP job. - The Apartment Itself
I really do lose sleep over this. I hate strangers, so the idea of living with people whom I have never met freaks me out. I know, I've done it once before, and it was no big deal--but what if this time I get crazy partiers who ruin my future for me? I can't deal with that. If someone thinks it's okay to bring alcohol into my apartment, they ruin the program for everyone. It's such a selfish thing to do, bringing alcohol in to a Wellness apartment when you know it will get everyone kicked out. Ugh. - Money
I mentioned this earlier: I have to figure out the money situation. Last time I did the program, my parents paid for my food and gasoline, so all of my money could go towards non-necessities at Property Control. I have to budget myself this time, which I'm not really looking forward to. This whole "being an adult" thing sucks. I'm totally kidding. I filled up my gas tank, like, a total of once a month last time, and I hardly eat anything. The problem is that you end up eating out A LOT, whether it be at the parks or at Crossroads. I guess I'll become friends with leftovers. Ugh. Aside from food and gas, the only big expense should come from the Universal Studios pass, which I'm not going to be purchasing until, like September. Plus, hopefully, this time I won't be sick, so I'll have more hours. More hours = more money. I'll just have to watch my money and not buy everything I see at Property Control and wait until the Holiday Celebration to buy most of my stuff.
So that's that. I'm not even kidding about throwing everything that's left into a bag and leaving it behind. Or I'll just leave it all where it is.
Countdown update:
15 days 'til I check in at Vista Way!
In other awesome news, my Disney Store coworker and great ol' buddy, Bri, has booked us a room at All Star Movies for May 18th through May 20th. This way, we'll travel down on the 18th, check in to our room, explore a bit (Downtown Disney, parks, who knows?!), sleep, and then spend the 19th in the parks thanks to our Disney Store Cast Member Comp Tickets! It's a good thing Disney Transportation exists since I really don't want to drive my car around to the parks with it filled with stuff. We'll probably unload most of our stuff (see: things that can't survive in the heat) into our room. So now I'm extra excited since I've never stayed at an All Star Resort!
As far as my packing fiesta goes, I've cleaned out my closet and my clothes drawers already, I've emptied the drawers under my bed, and I've taken down all the stuff from my walls. All that's left are action figures, books, and then my computer/desk stuff. See, my parents are treating this as me leaving for good, so as I'm packing, I have to sort everything in to "Take to Disney" "Keep but Don't Take to Disney" and "Get Rid Of". So far, most stuff is falling in to the "Get Rid Of" category because, the way I see it, if I'm not going to use it in the next 7 months, I probably won't use it/wear it ever. The clothes I'm leaving are, like, jackets and sentimental things. I have found that I'm packing much more than I did last time for Disney, but, then, last time, I didn't pack enough and ended up buying a bunch of clothes. I'm coming prepared this time, since I won't have any money other than what I make at work.
I completed my pre-move shopping today, which is great. I now have a new quilt, new sheets (my current comforter is too warm for Florida, and I just needed new sheets), storage-y type things, and some fun accoutrements for the apartment. I still need a storage solution for my DVD collection and my Wii games, but I think I'll just use the bottom drawer of the chest-of-drawers in the room seeing as how last time I just used it as a junk drawer.
My tax return still hasn't come in the mail, and I've used up my graduation money buying things for the move (clothes, comforter, blah blah blah. The only *really* frivolous thing was Disney DDR, and it was totally worth it). So, yeah, I really need that refund before I leave so that I can, you know, buy food and stuff.
If anyone knows of a good way to store Post-Its, let me know...I think they're breeding in my room, and they're getting a bit out of hand.
So I realize I've been slacking on my blog duties. I'm ever so sorry! Now that graduation is out of the way and packing is very much under the way (see what I did there?), I shall try to blog everyday. I even wrote it down in my journal. The one I described as being "abstract" in my last post. You'd understand what I mean if you saw it.
Anyways, today's (err...tonight's) post is the fourth and final in the "best/worst rides/attractions" series. We will be covering the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Park: Disney's Animal Kingdom. Off we go!
Disney's Animal Kingdom!
The Bottom 5 Things* at Disney's Animal Kingdom
*there aren't enough rides/shows here for me to come up with 10. Sorry.
5. The Discovery River Boat Cruise.
Yeah. I know, "not fair!" right? The ride technically doesn't exist anymore, but it did at one point, and the characters still ride on it. Seriously, though, what was the thinking behind this one? "I know! We'll have a boat that floats around the entire park!" "Oh yeah? Will people be able to embark and disembark in Asia, Africa, Dinoland USA, and the rest of the sections of the park?" "No! It'll just make a circle! There's no point to it at all! It's like Seinfeld in ride-form: IT'S A RIDE ABOUT NOTHING!" "Well, we need something to spice it up...how about a dragon?" "Yeah, okay, we'll carve a cave that kinda-sorta looks like a dragon and then shoot fire out of it...you know, to get people excited about the Beastly Kingdome land!" "Yeah, about that..." Seriously, Disney, stupidest ride ever...and trying to "jazz it up" with Radio Disney music didn't help at all. The best part about this ride (and the reason I'm mentioning it) was that episode of Sabrina when they all went to Animal Kingdom and went on the boats, got off and exclaimed that it was "so exciting!" and that they had screamed in terror! The only terror felt on these boats was the feeling of never getting off. Ever.
4. The whole of "Discovery Island"/The Tree of Life
I must be missing something here. I've been told that there are "tons!" of animals to see here and that it's all scenic and beautiful. I've seen a few, mostly of the avian variety. Why don't they just call Discovery Island what it really is: the entrance. And as far as that tree goes, yeah, it's great and all, but there is NO way to see it close enough to find all the fun animals. Plus, I have to stand in line to see ITtBaB to see the only available close-up part of it, which I do NOT want to do (see: number 1 on this list). I feel like it's such a waste to put it out there and then make us all squint from the surrounding lands to see the animals. At least give us A) a fun sheet that shows us what animals are where and B) those tourist-y telescope things they have at, like, the beach and at the top of tall buildings. You know, the ones that you put a quarter in?
3. Rafiki's Planet Watch/Conservation Station/the train ride.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they have a place where we can learn about conservation and about how the animal keepers care for the animals. My main problem is that stupid train. My mom thought it was an actual train ride or something, and I had to explain to her that it was just the only way to get to Rafiki's Planet Watch. I love how there was some after-thought here in the form of "What can we give them to do on the train? Oh, I know, let's cut out a side of the train and show them where the animals sleep/are cared for!" except all you really see is the back of a bunch of buildings, no animals, and trucks driving around.
2. Kilimanjaro Safari.
Sorry. Hate it. It's super-boring, and now that they've changed the story-line from the first time I went, it's not fun anymore. This is one of those rides where they give you a lot of necessary set-up in the queue, but no one pays attention (see also: The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman at IoA, Dr. Doom's Fearfall at IoA). If you aren't watching that man on the TV or listening to your driver, the ride makes NO sense. Seriously, people, it's not just a way to look at animals...there is a plot there, too.
1. It's Tough to be a Bug.
Oh god. I have hated this thing since it first opened. I went to see this show during Animal Kingdom's first year or two and have had a deep, deep hatred of it ever since. See, what happened was my grandparents had taken my brother and I to see Honey, I Shrunk the Audience! at Epcot the day before and had known about the hoses under the seat. Thinking they were being hilarious, they aimed their hoses at us for extra mouse effect. My brother and I were not amused. So, naturally, we thought the effects for ITtbaB would come from under the seat. Boy, were we mistaken. In our attempts to avoid the hoses we assumed were under the seat, we sat sideways on the seat with our arms wrapped around our knees. Now, I spent the whole show with my eyes closed because I hate things jumping out at me in the dark (no, scratch that...I hate things jumping out at me, PERIOD). That scene where the bees come out, we were sure the hose would come from under the seat and blast air on us to feel like bees. We cowered back against the back rest as hard as we could when suddenly THE BACK OF THE SEAT ATTACKED US! I'm pretty sure I had bruises on my arm from that thing. I spent the rest of the show standing up with my eyes closed. I went back to see this with my parents this past March and sat forward in the seat so I didn't have to feel those bees again. Ugh.
The Top 5 Things at Disney's Animal Kingdom
5. The Shows
On the whole, I'm not a show-going person, but since I couldn't come up with 5 things I like about Animal Kingdom and I don't absolutely hate the shows here, I figured I'd include them. You're welcome.
4. Kali River Rapids
It's short and pretty dumb, but, like the shows, I couldn't come up with 5 things and I don't hate it.
3. Primeval Whirl
Three words describe this: fun, fun, fun. I love every bit of this crazy mouse coaster.
2. Dinosaur/Countdown to Extinction
Dinosaur is AWESOME. I'm not even kidding. I especially enjoy the picture faces everyone makes, and I'm proud of myself for being able to not scream/cringe/make a stupid scared face in the pictures anymore. Mostly, I just look annoyed these days because MAN that Carnotaurus is loud. I don't think people would be as scared if the thing wasn't so loud and bright with the flashing light...Disney loves a sensory overload, though. This one gets extra points, too, for the delicious smell and for the narrator/pre-show. I try to work lines from the pre-show in to everyday conversation. For example: "Flash photography, I wouldn't. It messes with the homing signal and that's. not. good." or "THEY'RE NOT GONNA MAKE IT! THEY'RE NOT GONNA MAKE IT!" love it.
1. Expedition: Everest.
This one is tied up there with Tower of Terror for my favorite ride in all of Disney property/ever. It does lose a couple of points because of the broken yeti. My mom had no idea the yeti was even there when she went on it in March since it was in whatever mode throws a strobelight on it. These days, if you don't know it's there and you aren't looking in the general area, you just assume the strobe light is your picture being taken. I was like "Hey, mom! Didn't you love the yeti?" and she goes, "What yeti? The shadow we saw before we went down the hill?" "No, the one at the end in the cave." "There wasn't a yeti there." "Yeah, there was." Other than that, the ride is a solid roller coaster. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
So I'm thinking that tomorrow's blog will be an overall Best/Worst of Disney and then after that, the food, and then I'll move on to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.
Things I am doing/want to be doing instead of writing my final papers:
- Learning the dance moves to Beyonce's "Single Ladies"
- Getting five stars on every song on every level of Guitar Hero: World Tour
- Attempting to play using the orange button on regular Guitar Hero
- Packing for Disney
- Surfing the internet, mindlessly
- Making delicious cupcakes
- Laundry
- Typing out lists of things I'd rather be doing
- Blogging, Tweeting, Skyping, Facebooking
Anyways, on to what you came for: lists. I'm trying to break these up so they're easier to read. I know they're text-heavy, but that's just because I'm too lazy to look up pictures.
Also, does anyone know if there's an easy LJ-cut equivalent for Blogger?
Disney's Hollywood Studios
The 5 Worst Attractions at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
5. Fantasmic.
I know this is going to annoy a lot of people, but I really don't like Fantasmic. For one thing, it's dated. You can tell it was created around the time of Pocahontas because of that ridiculous John Smith scene. For another thing, it's just not all that fantastic. There haven't been a lot of real, solid villains in recent Disney movies, so the references here can, at times, feel dated. Seriously, why is Chernabog referenced in so much stuff at Disney World? No kid I know has any idea who that is. During Spectromagic, you can hear the crowd go "Who IS that?" to the Chernabog float. And as much as I love Hercules, not a lot of kids know who Hades is. And he wasn't evil in the way they show him on the water screen. He was more a con-man than a cackling scary person. Oh, and the float parade at the end of the show feels out of place. Like, "Yay! Mickey defeated his nightmare (or whatever the "plot" of the show is)! Let's have every character ever come out! Oh, and let's throw in the tumble monkeys for good measure!" I do wish that Steamboat Willie character came out for meet-and-greets, though.
4. One Man's Dream
I know, I know, I know, I shouldn't put this. I love Walt, as do most people who work for the Company, but I feel like this museum should be somewhere else on property. Like in the Magic Kingdom. It would be great in MK, right at the beginning of Main Street, USA. It feels so out of place at DHS, and its location is terrible. It seems like such an after-thought attraction. Like someone said "We should have a Walt museum!" but there was nowhere to put it. Eventually someone shouted "Hey, there's that big empty stretch of buildings in the back of MGM, let's put it back there where no one goes!" Seriously, if Guests are coming from the right, they stop at the Voyage of the Little Mermaid. If they're coming from the left, they went to Pixar Place and turned for the Great Movie Ride. It's totally ignored.
3. The Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Hey, speaking of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid...I hate it. HATE IT. This may have something to do with my dislike for The Little Mermaid, though. The only redeeming scene in this show is the blacklight effects puppet scene. The stupid Ursula thing though, ugh. I hate that the hands are "puppets" and one CM is always more enthusiastic than the other, making Ursula look like she's had a stroke. One hand will be gesturing wildly while the other is being lazy. Terrible, terrible, terrible. And I never like being splashed with water in a theatre. Mostly because it's always way too cold. "But, Aurora," you say, "You've been out in the heat! The cold water should be refreshing!" Not when it comes after you've been in the air conditioning for an hour! (I'm including the time standing in the lobby, here.) Speaking of the lobby, if they're going to have stuff "come to life" they need to do more. Maybe they had more and most of it is broken...in that case, they need to fix it. Right now, people sound like crazy people when they shout "THAT PICTURE JUST LIT UP!" and no one around them saw it.
2. The Magic of Disney Animation
To be fair, this was down for refurb recently, so they may have fixed my issues with it. For one thing, the only reason anyone does this is for the Animation Academy. And if you think you're being smart and try to sneak through the Art of Disney to get there, you are mistaken. Unless you get particularly lazy CMs, they have been instructed NOT to let you through the store. Which makes sense. It would be like trying to go through the PoTC store to get to the ride just so you can see the final Jack scene or something. You sit through the show, you get to learn to draw. That show, though...can we please get a character OTHER than Mushu. And please, God, don't replace him with Stitch. On my List of Most Annoying Characters, Stitch is rated "More Annoying than Mushu," which is a hard rating to achieve. I'd even accept Tinkerbell, even though I don't like her...the host character should be a classic character that everyone knows. I'm sure some people don't know who Mushu is. (Although, to be fair, people may not know Tinkerbell. We got on the parking tram at AK, and my mom was talking about how excited she was because she met Eeyore. The guy in front of us asked who Eeyore was, and then proceeded to tell us that he had no idea who it was because he "doesn't know these new characters".)
1. Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Spectacular/Beauty and the Beast/Journey Into Narnia
I couldn't decide which of these I hate more, so I gave them a three-way tie. LMA annoys me because of the stupid lady who hosts it...I might enjoy it more if they dropped the whole "we're shooting a movie!" premise and just said "Hey, we're gonna show you how they do stunts in the movies!" I like not being treated like an idiot. Beauty and the Beast is just over the top cheese. And the Beast's "roaring" is pathetic. I've never been into the Narnia thing, but Autumn told me to rate it here because it's so bad. I have no interest in anything Narnia-related, and I can't imagine it will be there much longer (if it is there anymore at all) because Disney doesn't do the Narnia movies anymore.
The Top 5 Attractions at Disney's Hollywood Studios
5. Star Tours
I like a good motion simulator, and, while this is in desperate need of an update, it packs a lot of fun. I remember this was my favorite ride at MGM (until ToT came along) when I was a kid. I hate fireworks, and I used to trick my brother into going on Star Tours during the fireworks with the promise of "Oh, yeah, the fireworks won't start until we get out!" That pre-show video cracks me up, too. The hair. Oh god, the hair. I do enjoy the costumes here, too...
4. The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
As far as stunt shows go, I obviously prefer this one to LMA (number 1 on my "worst" list). Granted, it, too, needs an update, and it needs to lose the "We're shooting a movie! Look at our cameras!" bit, but it doesn't slap me in the face with the fake-movie like LMA does. This one is more "look how we do this" than "look at us do it". Plus, I really want to be an extra. Really, really, really.
3. Rock'n'Rollercoaster Starring Aerosmith
I'm not a fan of Aerosmith, but I am a fan of rollercoasters. While it may not be the best rollercoaster around (in fact, it's not. By far. And it gives out headaches like candy.) it is fun. I have been tring to pose during the launch for years now, and I am never successful.
2. The Great Movie Ride
Shut up, I think this ride is awesome. I love everything about this ride except for the Busby Berkeley scene being changed to its current, static scene. It looks terrible. They should really take that out or change it or something. My dream job (other than JC skipper) is to be a GMR driver. I'd love that so much! Plus, I'd yell out all the movie names in the montage at the end! And, yes, I have seen both the gangster and the cowboy scene.
1. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
This is, by far, my favorite ride on all of Disney property. Seriously. As I write this, I am sitting beside a Tower of Terror poster, there is a Tower of Terror keychain on my keyring, a framed ride photo is sitting on top of my dresser, and there is a Tower of Terror shirt in my laundry. I love it. Every little thing about it. I love the library, I love the boiler room, I love the people who think we're going to drop at the first stop, and, most of all, I love that you can feel the Florida heat coming towards you as your elevator moves forward toward the drop shaft. That is my favorite feeling at Disney World. Anytime I feel anything like that, I am instantly sitting in that elevator. Love it.
Honorable mentions (you decide if they go in the top or bottom):
- Sounds Dangerous: starring Drew Carey
- The American Idol Experience
- Toy Story Midway Mania
- The Backlot Tour
- Muppetvision: 3-d
- Playhouse Disney: Live on Stage!
So yeah. I suck so bad at keeping up with a blog. But no one is reading this...so it's not like I'm all that motivated. TELL ME IF YOU'RE READING!
Anyways, I'm going to go in order of opening date, so the next park up is Epcot. Then DHS. Then Animal Kingdom. Then park-wide stuff like food and shopping. Then overall favorites. Maybe I'll even include non-Disney parks in a post.
Onwards.
The Bottom 5 Rides at Epcot!
I'm combining WS and FW
5. Segway Test Rides at Innoventions
I'm counting this as a ride because I got on something and made it move. I stood in line with my mom, and EVERY operator we passed asked me some variation of "Are you SURE you're over 16?" I was like "I'M 20, I'M GRADUATING COLLEGE, AND MY MOTHER IS STANDING RIGHT HERE!" Annoying to the max. Also, driving a Segway ranks among the top most awkward things I have ever done.
4. Gran Fiesta Tour starring the Three Caballeros
I probably hate this because my ex loved the Three Caballeros, so we rode this one a lot. It's pretty bad, too. It's like no one could speak Spanish for "look like you're actually interacting with the characters and don't stare blankly in front of yourself." That chef guy is TERRIBLE. The Three Caballeros song is pretty catchy, though. I'll admit that.
3. Living With the Land
I actually know people who love this one. I'm not interested in gardening or fishery things at all, so it's pretty dumb to me. I understand why it exists where it does, though.
2. Mission: Space
I love, love, love thrill rides. The thrillier the better. Mission: Space, though, makes me uncomfortable. It doesn't make me nauseous or anything, it just makes me really uncomfortable. It would be fine if the launch/re-entry lasted, like, a half-second less. I do enjoy the pre-show, though.
1. Soarin
My hate for this one can be summed up by my dad's response: "Soarin? More like borin'!" This is, quite possibly, the most pointless ride ever devised. LOOK AT ME! I CAN SIT ON A BENCH AND DANGLE MY LEGS IN FRONT OF A MOVIE SCREEN! OOOOOOOOO! If I was actually hang-gliding, shouldn't I be laying on my stomach? Yes.
The Top 5 Rides at Epcot!
I'm combining WS and FW.
5. The Seas With Nemo and Friends
It's super cheesy and the vehicles are blatant re-imaginings of the Doombuggies from the Haunted Mansion over in MK. This ride is on the tops list for a few reasons:
-I love the jellyfish room. It's so pretty to look at. I want to reach out and touch them.
-The Angler Fish room. I'm pretty positive that this is one of the robot arms from Test Track. The Angler Fish has a special place in my heart due to the first time I rode the ride. I was leaning forward talking to my friends in the next Clammobile, and out of nowhere comes this thing SWINGING AT MY HEAD. It was terrifying. And awesome.
-Peach. Right before you unload, Peach is stuck to the final window into the aquarium, and she spends all day complaining about being stuck on the window. She tells you how many clams have come by and how tired she is of hearing the Big Blue World song. It's pretty awesome.
4. Maelstrom.
I remember riding this one when I was a kid and being scared that we were, in fact, going to go "OVER THE FALLLLLLLS" even though I had watched from outside and knew FOR A FACT that we weren't going over the falls. The ride scared me from the very start when you see the head of Thor or whoever that is and he shoots a laser at you out of his eye. I had no idea there were polar bears at the end. These days, however, I love it because it is just so BAD. Why is there always a super long line for this? The only educational part of it is "the spirit of Norway will always be ADWENTURRRRR" (yes, adwentur...that's how he says it). This was also where Rylee and I witnessed the old "yawn and stretch" move. Good times. Good times.
Off topic: I'm watching Phineas and Ferb. "As they say in Mexico, 'dosvidanya.' For those of you watching, that's TWO vidanyas!"
3. Spaceship Earth (the new AND old versions)
For those of you who don't know, SE went down for refurb while I was at Disney for my first CP. I was able to ride it right before it closed and then right after it re-opened. The old SE was about the history of communication, not it's more about the evolution of technology. It's basically the same, but it's now hosted by Dame Judi Dench. Worth the ride simply for the sassy engineer with an afro and go-go boots. She's my favorite animatronic in all of Disney World.
Off topic, again: Disney Channel just had a commercial for the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure. I'll have more on that in my next post. Just know: it's freakin awesome.
2. Journey Into Imagination with Figment
I know. I'm the only person who likes this. I can't help it...the song is freakin' catchy and Figment is just too adorable. And who knew skunks smell like coffee?
1. Test Track
Yeah, after a couple of rides, it kinda loses it's "YAY!" factor and gets boring, but the outside track part continues to be fun. "Put up 2, 5, and 7." "SEVEN?!" "Yeah. Seven."
So I definitely didn't post yesterday. Whoopsie. TWO posts today, then.
Magic Kingdom Attractions
The BEST attractions at the Magic Kingdom
2. The Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor
There's a lot of hate out there for MILF (yeah, that's the abbreviation. hehe.), and I don't understand why. I've never had a show where I didn't laugh. The audience "participation" is awesome. I love the re-telling of the Monster's Inc. story because the guy that plays Randall always does something wacky and Boo is always the most adorable kid in the park. I also love the mind-reading bit because I once saw it, and when they went to the woman she went "Que?" And had no idea what to do. It was so awkward. And I've always wanted to be "That Guy." In the beginning, they used to reference "That Guy" a whole lot. They seem to have lessened the "That Guy" comments. I bet they had complaints.
1. Philharmagic.
The best and most awesome attraction at the Magic Kingdom. Sure, it's your basic 4-d Disney attraction, but this one trumps all the other because of the delicious pie smell. Oh man, that scent is amazing. I know I've held my arms to the vent so I could smell that aroma all day long on my skin. Even while I'm driving in my car, if I hear "Be Our Guest," I expect to hear the whirring sound of the scent sprayers and smell fresh baked pie coming out of my air vent. Mmmm. They should sell perfume, candles, and/or air fresheners in the Philharmagic gift shop. People would buy it by the case. Or, at least, I would.
The WORST Attractions at the Magic Kingdom
5. The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management.
What IS this? Remember the catchy Tiki Room song? In the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room? Yeah, forget that. Now you get to sit in the Tiki Room and listen to Gilbert Godfried yell at you. And then everyone sings Conga. Because nothing says Disney or Polynesia like Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. And they sing Hot Hot Hot. Buster Poindexter is not more Polynesian than Ms Estefan. Terrible, terrible, terrible.
4. The Hall of Presidents
It's nice for a nap/to get out of the heat/to tell your teacher you "learned stuff" during your trip to Disney World. I hear there's a type of person who actually enjoys history and learning about the Presidents. Too bad this isn't their list. Boooooring. Heck, even some of the presidents nod off during the show.
3. Any parades/fireworks
Pointless.
2. Stich's Great Escape.
Here's a waste of space. I just came up with a terrible line: The only thing it's great at is making the Guests want to escape! KAZAAAM! I'm convinced the only purpose of the shoulder harnesses is to keep Guests from walking out. Plus, if you have weak shoulders, you will shortly suffer broken shoulders. The only way to survive this attraction is to sit up ridiculously straight at the beginning when the harness comes down and then slouch for the rest of the show. The burp isn't all that bad, but I'm tired of all of Disney rides/shows squirting me with water. I don't enjoy it.
1. The Country Bear Jamboree.
I'm sure this was awesome in 1971. In fact, I'm positive. I just took my mom to the Magic Kingdom, and she wanted to see the Jamboree and see how they've changed it. She, apparently, loved it as a kid...so much so that she had the record with the songs on it. After watching it, she looks at me and goes, "They haven't updated this at all in 40 years. They haven't even replaced the fur." Dear Disney Imagineers, update the music, update the AAs. Seriously.
Blog coming later tonight. Sorry I didn't post yesterday--was sick with pinkeye :-(
So, I definitely didn't post last night. Oops. Sorry about that. My eyeballs start hurting after a little while on the computer.
The Countdown Is On. Part 1 of an Ongoing Series.
In preparation for the CP, I am writing a series about my favorite and least favorite things at the Walt Disney World Resort. It will be broken down into the parks, then into rides, shows, restaurants, etc.
Today, we start with the Magic Kingdom because it is the park with which everyone is most familiar.
Aurora's Top 5 Rides* at the Magic Kingdom
5. Splash Mountain.
Many people would put this at the top of their respective lists, but it's at the bottom of my top five. The ride is certainly enjoyable, but I feel like they tried too hard to tell the Br'er Rabbit story and completely missed. You have to ride numerous times to actually *get* what's going on. "Why are we in this cave with bees in it?" "Ohhhhh, I'm supposed to be plunging into the briar patch!" You switch roles between observer of the story to actually being Br'er Rabbit. Worst part of the ride? The freakin water cannons at the top of the briar patch. You've begun your ride, and you circle around the top of the briar patch, eagerly craning your neck to watch the boats go down the fall. Suddenly you find yourself being shot in the face with gallon upon gallon of water. NOT COOL! You get more wet from those stupid cannons than from the actual drop. It sucks for me, especially, because I'm often the person to load last, which puts me on the cannon side. Or I ride with a jerk who ducks without telling me about the cannons. Other bad points about Splash: if you're going to thumb your nose at the public for the response to Song of the South by installing what is basically a Song of the South ride, at least include Uncle Remus, as it IS his story. None of this Br'er Toad/Frog business.
4. Space Mountain.
I'd put Space higher on my list, but it's going down for refurbishment while I'm down there, so it loses points for not being open. Also, I'm pretty sure it's possible to get whiplash from the current ride. Points are given, however, for the time I rode and my friend behind me was suddenly hit with the need to, ahem, urinate. The entire ride was spent listening to him yell how badly he had to use the restroom. Hilarious.
3. Jungle Cruise/Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin
This one is a tie. The Jungle Cruise is on here only because I would love to be a skipper. It's my kind of dry humor. Needs to be updated, though. Also, skippers should be hired through Entertainment, not Attractions. Buzz is on here because I love anything to do with Buzz. Also, I consistently beat the people with whom I ride. However, I definitely think they could do better with the ride itself (different colored lasers, for example, so you know which one is yours. It wouldn't be that hard to ensure that no one in the room had the same color as you, since only so many cars can fit in a room).
2. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
I have no idea if that is the actual name of the ride or not. I just like the Heffalumps and Woozles scene because I had this tape when I was a kid that had that song on it. I used to sing that song ALL the time, even though I had no idea where it was from. Also, I like the effect when you enter the flooded room and your honeypot feels like it's floating.
1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
8 words explain my love for this coaster. "This here's the wildest ride in the willllderness!" Sitting by yourself on this ride could be a potentially bad idea. If you're my size, you'd better have buns of steel--you have to grip that seat to prevent falling out. I love the visuals as you ride...especially (of course) the dinosaur. Could be in my top rides of the Walt Disney World Resort. We'll see.
Aurora's Bottom 5 Rides* at the Magic Kingdom
5. Pirates of the Caribbean.
I don't understand what the story is supposed to be here. I've heard lots of theories, but with the addition of Jack, none of them make sense. And the whole "Jack is looking for the treasure map" makes NO sense with some of the scenes. Also, the use of flash photography on this ride has gotten out of hand. They may as well add a strobe light effect to the entire thing. Ugh. I just don't get it. And I don't understand the love for it, either.
4. Snow White's Scary Adventures
Look, the first time I rode it, I expected something scary, so I was ready to jump at any minute. Boy, was I disappointed. Also, does Disney hold stock in blacklight-responsive paint? Between this ride and Peter Pan, I know just how many soap spots are on my clothes and how white my new shoes are. I suppose it would help if I actually liked Snow White. Hey, speaking of Peter Pan...
3. Peter Pan's Flight
Here's another one I don't understand. It consistenly has the longest line in all of Disney World property (yes, longer than Soarin' or TSM). The ride, frankly, sucks. I really don't know what the big deal is.
2. The Haunted Mansion
Like Snow White, the first time I rode this (during my first CP), I expected scary things. It wasn't scary, and it wasn't "scary funny" as so many people like to call it. It was like riding through an episode of Scooby Doo (which, by the way, has similar rides). Like so many other rides, they need to choose a story and stick with it. A lot of people have died here, apparently while having a party. The people who dress worse than the party people do get to have their own party in the graveyard. Also, the rooms are alive, and there's a funeral being held, too. Oh, and there are ghosts on the stairs. Did we mention the murderous woman in the attic who enjoys beheading her multiple husbands? Seriously, Disney, what's the point here? Like Pirates, the scenes have nothing to do with the ones that came before or the ones that come after. And that annoys me.
1. Astro Orbiter
A lot of people hate this one for the height. I have no problem with heights. I hate this one because of the hassle. I have to stand in line to ride an elevator to the top. There might be three in my party, but we're three adults who require three SEPARATE rockets. Do not try to make me squeeze in with another full grown person. Also, I'm always on the elevator with the worst people in the world.
So there you have it. My best and worst rides* of the Magic Kingdom park. Yes, some of the opinions are based on stupid things, but it's my blog and I can say what I want.
*rides means things that move. While Stitch's Great Escape may have a shoulder harness, it does not move, so it will be considered a show
So I'm going to try to update this daily from now on, even though I know I'll fail at this goal miserably. Oh well.
First off: I don't think I wrote a whole blog about this yet, just a sad statement. Rylee, the girl I was going to room with, didn't get accepted into the CP. It's probably because she left her first CP to go be an au pair in France...I know it's not because of her work ethic or whatever, because *someone* who got kicked out of our apartment during the last CP got herself accepted for Fall. Whatever. It's dumb. So now all of those awesome plans Rylee and I had will never come to fruition. And it's sad. We had videos planned and fun things for our apartment planned (like decorating our room completely with the Jonas Brothers), and now none of those things will ever happen. It's very depressing since we've been planning to be roommates for MONTHS now. I even made her a stuffed penguin, which I will now have to mail to her. Sad.
Second thing: I found a new roommate! Her name is Autumn, and we get along pretty well online, so hopefully she won't try to murder me in my sleep or be some crazy person in real life. So, umm...*fingers crossed*. lol, I'm just kidding. Autumn's pretty swell. Our birthdays are TWO days apart. I'm, like, exactly 48 hours older than her. That's cool, right? We'll celebrate our birthdays together!
Third thing: I had to leave the Facebook CP group because it got really really annoying. Mostly it's because of one person who thinks she knows everything, but she really doesn't. Like, I kept telling everyone that if you use the roommate matching, you don't get to choose your apartment size or complex, and she kept telling everyone I was wrong. Well, wouldn't you know it, I WAS RIGHT. Because, you know, that's what happened to me. I keep seeing her telling people all this stuff about "stand in line with the people you want to be in an apartment with!" It doesn't matter with whom you're standing in line--if you already chose a roommate, the program already assigned you an apartment. I'm not kidding. You can ask, but they'll tell you the only way to choose is to leave your roommate.
Fourth thing: I have pink eye. Possibly in both eyes. It sucks.
